Charles Harrop-Griffiths, b.1991, is a London born British Mixed Media artist currently residing in Bermuda. His work balances on the edge of a physical and digital art process in response to the imbalance between reality and technology today. He produces etchings, paintings, photography as well as a wide range of digitally produced images, animations and Virtual Reality experiences. His subjects differ widely, but relate closely to the impact of technology on society. He has a keen interest in the importance of architecture, nature and history which he attempts to reflect in his work. Charles has a background working in the film and architecture industries, and studied Art History BA at University of Nottingham, and Fine Art MA at University of the Arts London.

STATEMENT:

"I draw, paint and sculpt and have done so since I was a child. My experience and my work have taken me to experiment with film, music, VR design, software development and architecture but most of all visual art.

My childhood was littered with the pull from the physical world to the digital. Whether to run through the woods or spend hours playing video games. I think this is where my interest in the 2 sides of our reality began.

It feels important to me to demonstrate a balance. I create physical work, digital work, and work that has correlating physical / digital counterparts. I aim to include more installation work with digital technology and physical works opposing and integrating with one another as if both are present in their own separate worlds.

I like to see new technology as a medium. When I conquer using one thing, another new exciting opportunity comes about. I feel we are all lost in an endless upward curve of technological progression and it’s difficult to hold firmly onto any one process.

I like the idea of representing the internet as streams of colliding information and media. This can be seen in several of my paintings, 3D environments and NFTs. I like to consider each line as a different piece of information and as they interact and interconnect, this creates larger packages being sent in the digital realm.

Religion is a central inspiration to my work and ideas. I am not particularly religious; however, I understand the significance of it. Religion has inspired some of the greatest paintings, sculpture and architecture ever made. My work is inspired by religious art in the context of a more secular world. I like to believe that the emerging technologies have lead to humans becoming the creators of their own heavens and hells."
